42-х летний безработный то ли болгарин, то ли поляк, то ли серб приезжает в Лондон с 40 фунтами в кармане. Он ничего не умеет делать, обладая лишь уникальной способностью постоянно пить водку и курить самокрутки.
Прожив на благодатной английской земле полтора года, он превращается в уникального шеф-повара, зарабатывает честным трудом 12 тыс фунтов чистыми (эту сумму он собрал всего за четыре последних месяца проживания в ЮК) и открывает на эти деньги ресторан у себя на родине.

«Научившись, не забудьте вернуться домой» - как оказалось, я не одинока в идентификации основного посыла этого произведения. Китаянка Жаклин тоже так считает:
«I was drawn to the story because it is about migrants in the UK. I wanted to know what would happen to Lev, Lydia, and the rest of the characters in the ‘vegetable world’. They all have at least one thing in common – their countries are poor, and they all hope to have a better life in terms of either financial gain or, in Lydia’s case, change of life style by leaving their own countries to join a ‘free world’.
Rose Tremain has however not allowed her characters to stay in the UK. Her message is clear: ‘After you’ve got what you wanted – Go home!’ That is what has happened to Lev, Lydia, and (eventually) Vitas. As regards the two ‘good-natured’ Chinese, Sonny and Jimmy Ming, she probably doesn’t know whether it would be a good idea to send them back to China.
Thank goodness, Tremain has assigned a pleasant ending for Lev, but in real life, how realistic would that have been? To me, how Lydia’s life turned out is a bit puzzling (and disappointing). No matter how much we talk about women liberation these days, the quickest solution for a woman’s woe is still to hand her over to a man who is wealthy (and intelligent enough) to meet her needs. If Lydia’s becoming a mistress of a famous musician is justified in world terms, then that world should also accept ‘sex worker’ is an honourable profession. So, what does Tremain really want to say here?
Tremain’s writing is poetic. The story flows, bringing along with it the inexplicable sadness of life (without judgment, anger and prejudice) -- somehow, sometime, things will happen, whether one likes it in that way or not.

«I did enjoy 'The Way Home' but did not think it was Rose Tremain at her best. Lev's story was strongest at the beginning - the ending with his saving up of so much money so quickly in order to return home to create a restaurant was not so believable. This would surely be a longer term dream for someone like Lev. The ending seemed rushed - I think Tremain could have ended it in a different way.
I found Lydia's story strange. She wasn't a character that I warmed to and didn't know what to think about her. I too wanted a warmer ending with the relationship between Lev and Lydia.
I have read that Tremain wanted the reader to empathise with the plight of immigrants as a whole through the identification of one immigrant's story. Yes, I think that she succeeds in this, although it is not a perfect novel»
